This is a move that most traditional fountain ink pen companies have adopted to adjust with the set market scenario. People have a lot of set prejudices regarding the design and the mechanism of an ink pen and the population of people using the fountain, as a source of writing is a very low statistic. People have largely taken to the idea of using bal point pens as these are not only easier to use but also much cheaper. There is no need to bother with maintenance and other such issues in the case of a ballpoint pen and the ink is normally available in the form or refills and recharges which again are extremely affordable.
The fountain pen companies were at a loss of their wits and were going down the financial ladder each passing day. Some producers were of the opinion that the ballpoint was a recent fad and would walk out of the scene as fast as it had gotten popular. There were others who felt that the ink pen would return to favor when people discovered that the bal pens were not very long lasting. In the bargain the only profit that the naked eye could perceive was to the regard that people got more used to the bal pen and the fountain pen was soon out of their minds.
It was in this connection that Walter Davies discovered that the fountain pen was also capable of working with a ballpoint nib. There was one change that had to be made in the mechanism and that was regarding the removal of water from the ink to be used in such pen. The water quotient of ink in ballpoint fountain pens was replaced with resins and oil. There were other discoveries made in the same direction and soon a number of bal point fountains were launched in the market. The result was that the companies saw a greater degree of sales. The original figures were never to be gotten back but the recent innovation made the companies have a root for the survival strategy.
